What perfect timing. My friend Beth sent me a link to this wonderful Youtube video featuring Elizabeth Gilbert, the author of Eat, Pray, Love, in which she gives her take on creativity. The idea of this conversation between me and this something wondrous outside of myself, that sense of connection, is absolutely wonderful.

And what I love the most? I just have to show up – show up in front of my writing software, show up with pen in hand, pad on lap, show up, show up – that’s my job, and then it’s a matter of trust and openness.

I love it.

Creative Kids

We spent the day at Aberfoyle Junction; it’s a model railroad place out in Guelph that’s really amazing. Filling 1500 square feet of space, the layout represents trains and tracks running in Southern Ontario in the 1950s. Every half hour or so, the lights dim and it becomes “night”, and that in itself is such a spectacular show. Ward, Dylan and I have been going every year since Dylan was two. They open to the public for two weeks in May and three weekends in October/November. Dylan absolutely loves Aberfoyle Junction; he has a tendency to mark off time in terms of this train show (as in, “it’s fall. How many more sleeps before Aberfoyle Junction”?)

Of course, with all the running around, we didn’t get much drawing done. But when he came home, Dylan decided to use the Paint program on his computer. He’s been doing a bit of drawing in Paint lately, so we saved today’s for his Big Draw post:

I didn’t draw today, but I’ve got a great substitute! My daughter Hayley finished the video she just made with her friend Heather, and they’ve uploaded it to YouTube. It’s hilarious, especially during the fight scenes. She’s the one with the dark hair. And if you look very carefully, about midway through the video, you’ll see Dylan riding his tricycle on the back deck. He saw them filming outside and had to get out there and be a part of the action

Film: Who Does She Think She Is?

I just came across a post at Creative Construction about a new film called Who Does She Think She Is? It’s about creative women and motherhood, and the choices that most mothers have, at one time or another, felt the pressure to make.

The film opens on October 17 – you can check out the screenings at Who Does She Think She Is? to see if it will be showing at a location near you. I had a little bit of trouble scrolling through the listings, but I don’t think there was a Canadian location listed. You can preorder the DVD, though, from the site.

This definitely looks like an interesting film to see.

Somewhere along the way, making yourself a priority has become, for many women, a sign of “selfishness”. My experience? When I care enough about myself to make “me” a priority, my happiness is reflected in the world around me – my husband, my children, my family and friends mirror the joy that I feel.

Sometimes, I look at my daughter, who’s 14, and I ask myself, Do I want her to grow up thinking her lot in life is to sacrifice her own needs and desires for those of others around her? The answer is always a very clear and resounding, “No, absolutely not.”

And I love who I am enough to have the same clear answer for myself.
